The Chemistry of Adhesion: Why Most Shingle Seals Fail
On a standard residential roof in Chesapeake or Surry, the shingles are held together by a thin strip of thermally-activated bitumen. While this works in mild climates, the extreme thermal cycling of the Hampton Roads region—where a roof can hit 160 degrees at noon and drop to 70 degrees at night—causes most generic sealants to become brittle. Once the "bond-line" crystallizes, the shingles lose their wind-uplift resistance, leading to massive blow-offs during the next coastal gale.
Polymer-Modified Bitumen
We utilize shingle systems enhanced with polymer-modified bitumen. By adding elastic rubbers to the adhesive strip, the bond remains flexible and "sticky" even after decades of exposure to the Virginia sun. This chemical advantage is why our installations consistently survive storms that destroy neighboring roofs.
