HAMPTON ROADS - PENINSULA
AQUASHIELD ROOFING SERVICES NEWPORT NEWS - HAMPTON
The Virginia Peninsula is a peninsula in southeast Virginia, USA, bounded by the York River, James River, Hampton Roads, and the Chesapeake Bay. The land portion of Hampton Roads has been historically divided into two regions, the Virginia Peninsula or Peninsula on the north side, and South Hampton Roads on the south side. (Locally, South Hampton Roads is commonly called "the Southside", but this is not to be confused with "Southside Virginia", a separate region of the south-central portion of Virginia located farther inland.) More recently, the boundaries of the Hampton Roads metropolitan area have expanded to include the two southernmost counties of the Middle Peninsula, across the York River from the Virginia Peninsula.
Even though part of Hampton Roads is called the Southside by some locals, the Peninsula is the term that most locals describe the cities of Newport News, Hampton, Poquoson, Seaford, Williamsburg, Grafton, Jamestown, and Gloucester, Virginia. For most locals, they must drive through the Monitor-Merrimac Memorial Bridge-Tunnel or the I-64 Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel to reach the Peninsula from south Hampton Roads. When people in Hampton Roads refer to the Peninsula they are referring to the northside of Hampton Roads which includes a few main cities.
City Of Newport News
The area now known as Newport News was once a part of Warwick County. Warwick County was one of the eight original shires of Virginia, formed by the House of Burgesses in the British Colony of Virginia by order of King Charles I in 1634. With many residents employed at the expansive Newport News Shipbuilding, the joint U.S. Air Force-Army installation at Joint Base Langley-Eustis, and other military bases and suppliers, the city's economy is very connected to the military. Despite city efforts at large-scale revitalization, by the beginning of the 21st century, the downtown area consisted largely of the coal export facilities, the shipyard, and municipal offices. It is bordered by some harbor-related smaller businesses and lower-income housing.
Newport News is known for the heavy traffic and one of the most notable colleges. Christopher Newport University is located in Newport News. George Washington University is also in Newport News. Newport News is a big city with some good areas and some bad high crime areas. If you get a chance, I suggest stopping by What-A-Burger located at 6117 Jefferson Ave, Newport News, VA 23605.
City of Hampton
The city of Hampton, Virginia features a wide array of business and industrial enterprises, retail and residential areas, historical sites, and other points of interest, such a NASCAR short track, the oldest Anglican parish in the Americas (1610), and a moated, six-sided, historical bastion fort. Whether you are going to attend a concert at the Hampton Coliseum or going swimming at Buckroe Beach, chances are you have been to Hampton if you live on the Peninsula. The city of Hampton is a wonderful place to live for families.
City of Poquoson
The city of Poquoson is one of the oldest continuously named cities in Virginia. It is also one of the few to retain a name derived from the Native Americans who inhabited the area before colonization by the English began in the 17th century. The town became an independent city in 1975 in order to maintain this status. The change from incorporated town to independent city status also effectively protected Poquoson from potential annexation suits by the adjacent City of Hampton. Poquoson is a peninsula jutting into the Chesapeake Bay and the oldest continuously named town in Virginia, where crusty watermen mingle with brainy NASA scientists, and where family histories go back to the 1700s.
Poquoson Museum Memorial offers a great look at nature and history. If you want some fresh seafood then I suggest you stop at Bill Forrest Seafood which is located at 287 Messick Rd, Poquoson, VA 23662.
City of Yorktown
Yorktown is one of three sites of the Historic Triangle, which also includes Jamestown and Williamsburg as important colonial-era settlements. It is the eastern terminus of the Colonial Parkway connecting these locations. Yorktown is also the eastern terminus of the TransAmerica Trail, a bicycle touring route created by the Adventure Cycling Association. Yorktown is on the Peninsula right next to Seaford, Virginia, and Grafton, Virginia. Some notable places in Yorktown are the American Revolution Museum at Yorktown and the Yorktown Victory Monument.
City of Williamsburg
The city of Williamsburg has a tourism-based economy which is driven by Colonial Williamsburg, the city's restored Historic Area. Along with nearby Jamestown and Yorktown, Williamsburg forms part of the Historic Triangle, which annually attracts more than four million tourists. Modern Williamsburg is also a college town, inhabited in large part by William & Mary students, faculty, and staff.
